From: "World Chess Championship", INTERNET:newsletter@mark-weeks.com Date: 00/09/06, 08:28 Re: Chess History on the Web (2000 no.17) A few months ago, I posted an article titled 'Site Review - Chess Downloads', which was mirrored on the newsletter as 'Chess History on the Web (2000 no.10)'. The address of the post on the Chess History discussion group is... http://x63.deja.com/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=623583344 ...It reviewed two sites which maintain links to Web sites offering games in downloadable format. The two sites were... 'Chess Downloads by Klaus Wrba' http://home.t-online.de/home/wrba.klaus/download.htm *** 'The Homepage of Lars Balzer' http://www.rhrk.uni-kl.de/~balzer/index.html ...While preparing the article, I combined the links from the Wrba & Balzer sites, created a new list, and loaded it onto the Web. My comment at the time was, 'my new list is not particularly useful. The links need to be annotated to guide visitors to those sites which are most likely to deliver the sought-after files.' Lee Holder, who is on the discussion group as member 'lkholder', repeated the process of combining the Wrba & Balzer lists, but took the big extra step of annotating the consolidated list. --- (embedded email message) --- From: Holder, Lee Date: 2000/08/23 Re: links to chess sites with games I recently went through all of the links on Lars Balzer & Klaus Wrba's web sites. In the process, I found many dead links and many more changed web addresses. In addition, some of the sites no longer have games (or at least, I could not find any). I put the updated information in the attached Excel spreadsheet. (I put the information in a spreadsheet to easily sort the sites.) In the spreadsheet, I also classify the sites by what type of games are present (events, players, openings, other) and whether the site appears to be updated regularly. I also note the format of the games (PGN, Chessbase, etc.). If you find any errors in this information, please let me know. The Excel spreadsheet lists only active sites (valid links) where I could find games. Where a Balzer or Wrba link was invalid, I tried to find if the site had moved. Updated links are in the Excel spreadsheet. Where I could not locate the site, it is listed in the attached text file. In the text file, I also list active sites where I could not find any games. Note that the Excel spreadsheet has additional sites, not listed by either Balzer or Wrba, that I found have games. Also note that America-Base only has one entry - I did not list the country sub-sites separately. --- (end message) --- Lee has graciously consented to allow me to post his results. I converted his Excel spreadsheet and accompanying notes to a single Web page, which you can find at address... http://members.tripod.com/~Mark_Weeks/chw00i01/chw00i01.htm ...Here's a big thanks to Lee for preparing and sharing his new list of chess downloads. Bye for now, Mark Weeks
